A Little History

Ford County was established in 1867 and named for Colonel James H. Ford, who oversaw the building of Fort Dodge on the Arkansas River. The Santa Fe Trail crossed the county long before settlement, and Dodge City was founded in 1872 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad arrived. From about 1875 to 1885 it was one of the West's famous cattle towns, home at times to Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson. The Classical Revival Ford County Courthouse in downtown Dodge City was built in 1912 and 1913.
